ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I wanted a departure from the norm of portraiture and this was a period in my life when I used butterflies as a main focus to represent transformation of self and life. This piece takes a classic image of skull and flowers and makes it more contemporary and less heavy of death. The entire piece is of an abstract nature by all elements of piece made of butterflies, both painted 2-D (flowers), 3-D layers (skull). Butterflies in many cultures represent the transition of life. To create the blackest of black in the skull I mixed charcoal into the paint.
