About The Artwork

Carousel is part of a body of work exploring feelings and memories relating to my fathers mental health. He never really talked about how it felt during the mania or depression, however, I have talked with a number of people who are bipolar. They described the euphoria of the mania as well as the sheer despair of the downs. As I understand more about the condition I have tried to capture those insights in my work. For these works I created grounds embedded with complexity, colour and texture to reflect the nature of the mental disorder. Using the resultant unexpected patterns to guide the ideas. Within these works the fictive space is used to convey the passage of time rather than just a physical environment. I wanted to convey both sides of the condition – areas of yellows and reds to representing “the high”, juxtaposed with looming, billowing areas of charcoal infused darkness. The Carousel horse crashing to earth is a one of the metaphors used by a sufferer to represent the changes in their mind state.

Andy is a British artist based in Warwickshire. He won the Ashurst Emerging Artist Employees choice prize in 2018. He is currently engaged in a project with the Institute of Mental Health in Nottingham creating a series of paintings based on people who have experienced Post Traumatic Stress. This is his second project to receive funding from Arts Council England. Previously he created a series of exhibitions based on his work with young people to commemorate the First World War Centenary [www.lostgeneration.info] . Andy's focus on mental health started during his recently completed MA. He used this to explore his experiences of his father's bipolar condition and how that impacted his growing up. Andy enjoys working with the public, this is reflected in works such as “Gassed” created with Year 9 pupils of Cockburn School and subsequent projects for Leamington’s Art in the Park and for UHCW Andy came late to art, becoming a full-time artist in 2010 after spending the first part of his career in marketing research and advertising. A serious illness and a damascene moment on the commute to London lead him to embark on a new direction.
