About The Artwork

To discuss “soul” in visual form, I utilize various human characters made of transparent crystalline , together with viewfinders and rows of bar codes. The viewfinders are broken , because I try to remind viewers to consider this old topic of “soul” in a unconventional way, a unique visual way. The bar codes imply an act of consuming. The people on my paintings are all public figures. In one sense, their souls have been consumed over and over again, by us---general people. The different forms of bar codes represents the different soul energy of different people. The crystallized transparent images with broken viewfinders become some sort of totem. This is a personal and artistic way of presentation. Through recasting “big souls”of public figures on these paintings, I try to shape the soul of myself, of every viewers. It is a Zen-like way of thinking and experience. When creating and viewing these paintings, I also think of the heavy bondage on our souls accumulated since ancient time, like layers of marks deposited in a rock. Closing our eyes, away from visual noise , we can clearly perceive the existence of ourselves. We may approach our souls more easily in this way . Then, I can’t help to asking: are the representations of soul in visual form all false? Have we been cheated by visual presentations and changed by them? Can we recast our souls and redeem ourselves through pure and quieter experience ? I am looking forward to explore the topic of “soul” with you, in an artistic way,
