ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece was inspired my the need the set yourself free and start over. Letting go of fear and anything else that holds you back. A few years ago, between 2019/20, I was going through a lot and was at the point where I needed to start over. When I came to the conclusion that I was ready for a change I shaved my head. The feeling of cutting my hair was the most liberating feeling ever. That act inspired this painting. The hand holding the braid is trying to keep her bound. Forcing her to stay in this space of misery. She starts with cutting the roses, a symbol of beauty, before cutting her hair and risking ridicule from her peers in order to free herself.

b. New York 1992 Lives/works: Lexington, SC. Medium: Oil and mixed media “EDEN’s work is structured upon the melding of abstract, surrealism, and figurative. She centers her work around the journey through trauma, healing, and growth, while having Black women, and children as the central focus. Her goal is to express her visual interpretation of life’s journey, as well as, amplify the voices of the silenced. She seeks to tell stories and show that things aren’t always as we perceive them to be. Her work touches upon subjects such as race, sexuality, mental health, human emotion, environmentalism, activism, spirituality, healing, and uplifting women, specifically black women, in society. She discusses topics that we would otherwise ignore daily basis. She creates what she feels. She creates stories. Both her own and those of others.”
