ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Subject: Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, Catania, Italy Description: This painting is a depiction of the courtyard and bell tower, designed by Carmelo Sciuto Patti, at the Cattedrale di Sant'Agata in Catania, Italy. Rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style following the destruction of the city in the 1693 earthquake, the bell tower is unique within the city. As part of the reconstruction of the city strong urban planning regulations were put in place to minimize risk in case of future earthquakes, including disallowing freestanding bell towers of this type as they pose a threat to surrounding buildings. This rule led to the common practice of centralizing the bells below the cross at the apex of the facade. However the Cathedral used its large courtyard to mitigate the risk of a falling bell tower and its elevated civic status allowed the construction to proceed - proving that there is an exception to every rule. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
