About The Artwork

This artwork is created based on the stories I documented from my 90+-year-old mother about her grandmother. It is the first in a series that I plan to paint. This depicts the time period early 20th.C when women gathered in their courtyards and worked on their spinning wheels. Here I envision my great grandmother and the women of that era spinning the wheel and she is pulling the Sut(thread) from the clouds above symbolizing the stories that they use to share while doing this activity. The letters in Punjabi (Gurmukhi) on the bronze metallic sheet wall represent their Punjabi culture and roots. The bright clothes depict the vibrant way of dressing for the women of those times. The spinning wheel is called Charkha in India.
