Circles No. 9 came from a renewed attention to color. I used pink to offset all of the other colors and create a lightness which eases the tension of the painting. I particularly like how focusing on the pink dots gives movement to the painting and lets the viewer partake in a journey of sorts. I believe the viewer who takes the time to view this painting will appreciate how the symmetry of the circles allows the eye to go past the circles into the pink dots which takes the eye to a dimension unseen on a cursory viewing of Circles No. 9. I paint with acrylic paints because I like the brightness of the paint and the relatively fast drying time which allows me to paint my paintings in layers faster. I also like canvas board because I like the sturdiness of the board as opposed to a stretched canvas. I believe using a canvas board will allow the painting to hold up better over the years with less chance of damage to the canvas. Why did I decide to use circles as a subject of not just one painting but twenty four paintings? The circle is the only thing in human control that can be and is always perfect. It has no beginning and no end, it encircles anything which is inside of it and keeps out anything that is outside of its perimeters. The circle represents eternity, God, perfection and creates a feeling of control amid chaos.

I am Kenneth Colwill, an Abstract Painter, a native of Manhattan, New York and have resided on Long Island since 1964. I'm a self taught painter who started painting in 1962 at the age of ten. I was influenced by the works of Vincent Van Gogh. From the beginning painting was as essential to my being as breathing. I have painted in many genres and was a surrealist painter for thirty years. Eight years ago after a near death experience, I “forgot” how to paint. I had to re-teach myself how to paint. My style of painting changed dramatically and I became absorbed by abstraction and fell in love with the brightness and versatility of acrylic paint. As an abstract painter I have grown and matured in consistency and design and am still evolving today. I had a quirky habit of throwing out my paintings when I got tired of looking at them. For me, the value of painting is in the process of the painting itself, not in the end result. Due to my daughters influence, I have stopped discarding my paintings, and am now sharing, showing and selling them. For this reason I have only a few paintings from my earlier years, the rest have been sold or discarded during my "discarding" years. Private Collections I have sold paintings to multiple private collectors on Long Island and Manhattan NY. Public Collections "Sacred Heart" Franciscan Friars of Compassion Friary, South Gastonia, NC. Donated 2016. "Passion" Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Ronkonkoma NY. Donated 2010.
