This piece was a subconscious contemplation about the isolation and suspended life as a result of this pandemic. I created it with the original intention of working through the idea of free will versus divine fate, and whether individuals have a choice in how their lives unfold. Throw in some collective religious trauma, and the picture becomes even clearer. The butterfly represents the free will and desire to fly anywhere in the world, but the pinch of a religious sister holds it back. Is this a divine contract to remain cocooned for the indefinite moment, the innocent sister being the vehicle for divine intervention? Or is the sister acting under malicious intent to prevent the beautiful butterfly from living up to its true potential?
