My recent move to the United States aroused my interest in the history of systematic racism more than what I had studied before. The struggle that both people of color and women have faced not only in America but all around the world gave me the idea of creating a group of unapologetic women without a race. Artists in the past have explored the idea of racism in their works such as Faith Rignold with her ‘American People Series’ and Dana Shutz’s controversial paintings of the Whitney Biennal in 2017. However, I wanted my piece to be more of a mystery and convey a feeling of uneasiness. The focus of this piece is on the facial features and the use of non-traditional colors to create a three-dimensional face. The use of the color wheel, light and dark colors, and contrast were all factors that I paid close attention to. The piece emphasizes quite literally the value that lies within a woman of color through the use of strong color, symbols, and poses.
