ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My work focuses on formal and representational geometric abstraction and the application of paint to a flat surface. It is informed by the investigation of the semiotics of control and the physical forms of functional objects that assist that control. My works explore various colour and monochrome pallets. This work is painted in a bright pallet of sign writers enamels. The painting explores repetition of forms and colours in a pattern based on the movement of a Knight in the game of chess. The painting was completed in Autumn 2018 it is enamel paint on 12oz canvas primed 5 times with acrylic gesso, the edges of the canvas are not painted and are clean so the work can be hung without a frame.

I am based in the city of Cardiff, Wales,UK working in my painting studio next to the River Taff. My work focuses on formal and representational geometric abstraction and the application of paint to a flat surface. It is informed by the investigation of the semiotics of control and the physical forms of functional objects that assist that control. My paintings explore colour and monochrome pallets using them in the creation of geometric patterns. The process of creating the work is as important to me as the finished image, the aim is for them at first glance to look mathematically precise but at closer inspection there can be see incremental errors. This idea of imperfection created meticulously through a controlled process where the pursuit of perfection creates errors and the idea of the uncontrollable outcome of control interests me.
