My early paintings involve the interaction of colour with formal arrangements and are intended to connect with the observer on an emotional level - something to help restore calm to an increasingly busy and fractious world. Having recently returned to painting after a career in web design, I am exploring the relationship between visual form, colour and movement, using formal pattern as the basis for expressive artworks. The relationship between the emotive and the spiritual is an emergent theme as some of the works unconsciously reflect Islamic art. Similarly, in photography, I am exploring themes of movement and visual distortion that create a sense of timelessness, a slightly altered perception that suggests something ephemeral about the natural world. I am now also producing images in digital format for print on paper or canvas. I am finding the simplified process and increased experimentation this affords produces some interesting results and intend to continue working partly in this medium, partly on unique works on paper and other substrates.
