Cool kids Print

Every piece of art that I make, I make with no formal or informal training, and a child on my back, fighting to leave his mark on my work. I grew up with a mom and sister who loved art, mostly sketching. I was always too bad and too embarrassed to pick up a pencil. So, 23 years later, I picked up a paintbrush instead. I started when I was a young, unmarried, pregnant woman, fighting for a place in a society that I wasn't sure wanted to have me. Eventually, everything I painted became a reflection of what I felt in those months, and what I feel now: as an unqualified Indian living on foreign soil, trying to fit in. My scribbling one-year-old is my lens, every time I paint.
