I purposely made this piece rough & unfinished since it’s a rough virus with a rough & unfinished response. This painting was made during the Covid 19 pandemic while on lockdown. I have somewhat incomplete brushstrokes in the middle to signify what a virus actually is... not a real complete living thing but just opportunistic dna fragments that need animal cells to fully replicate. The red signifies the code red emergency we are in and the terrible mortality. The cross in the middle is a strained “Red Cross” in honor of all the first responders being so worn and strained right now. It is also off center a bit to hid a more sinister alternative interpretation: it looks like an upside down cross upon close inspection, which signifies all things bad, just as Christians view an upright cross as signifying all things good. It is blue on blue to show that the virus is invisible. The way I paint, when I try to make something preconceived it rarely works out, nothing I wrote above I thought about, I paint in a meditative state and literally have a big box of paint and grab with my eyes closed to choose the next color. Something else besides my own consciousness chooses. I don’t plan my brush strokes either, but I do consciously choose what to keep and what to paint over... This piece was specifically made upon request.

Lockey White is an emerging abstract painter living in Hilo, Hawaii. She uses an intuitive method for oil, acrylic and encaustic (wax) original one-of-kind creative and colorful pieces. She rarely knows what she will paint in advance but instead allows her hands to move intuitively while she just “plays with colors” & has fun figuring out what came out after she emerges from her painter’s trance and is done playing. The result is a unique expressionistic style reminiscent of great masters but with a modern multi-media twist that often incorporates natural elements and themes. The resulting style often is multi-layered and three-dimensional, transporting the viewer and providing glimpses into other possible realms.
