ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have found that contemplating the beauty and relative quiet of the hilly woodlands near my home in Los Angeles, CA inspires a state of creative reverie, emptying my mind of trivial distractions, allowing the poetic to take its place. This pastel is inspired by the Descanso public gardens, a 150-acre botanical garden located on the northern edge of the San Rafael Hills in Los Angeles county. The scene depicts a group of California Scrub Jays “protesting” the presence of a hapless juvenile crow who has unwittingly entered the jays’ nesting territory. The modern city-dweller must often travel ever-increasing distances to find the rewards of relative solitude. In these less-developed areas, we may find a renewed connection with the native flora and fauna and moreover, our essential self.

Artist Statement: In my highly developed, detailed pieces, I am essentially interested in creating narrative visual tableau emphasizing an evocative, poetic relationship between the human sitter or animal subject, and the natural or manmade landscape. As an artist who is persuaded by the enduring potential of pictorial realist style, my works are meant to appear as a plausible viewing experience—a resonant illusion achieved through a painstaking descriptive technique of skillfully applying to paper, multiple layers of marks and lines in pastel and charcoal. My practice also includes creating more rapidly conceived drawings, often drawn from the live nude or draped model, continuing a Fine Art tradition dating back to the humanist, classical revival of the European Renaissance. These works may either serve as preliminary investigations for future, more complex works, or remain “autonomous” explorations in their own right.
