ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Adding to the collection of past paper artwork... This is The second of a series that I am posting. The series deals with us humans and our need to be together, even when we are alone. It deals with the the wanting/striving self vis-à-vis reality. Two couples or a couple in front of the mirror painted in an abstract way so that the outline of the figures are silhouette-like. The painting is on a very thin brown/gray packing paper which gives the composition a frail look. Here you can see (maybe) a couple on the left looking into a mirror on the right. The reflected image is how they see themselves: together but separate, colder, more antagonistic (darker and lighter). We have a lot to learn about being honest to ourselves and to the humans around us. Mirrors hold us. Like ancient souls, we are prone to being ensnared in the pane of a looking glass. When we look at ourselves in a mirror, our gaze is returned by the very gaze that looks. We watch ourselves watching ourselves. The mirror can also be associated with the virtue of truth (for the mirror is said not to lie).

Painting and photography were always part of my being. it is time now to present and publish my art. Born in Germany, growing up in Israel, and living in the US exposed me to a variety of cultures and ides that are translated into a visual form.My first painting mentor was Gershon Knispel in Haifa, Israel, then Michael Irmer in Düsseldorf. I am interested in exploring new challenges.
