ABOUT THE ARTWORK

During my trips to the Peruvian Andes in 1998 and 1999, I saw that campesinas often work in the fields and town with babies slung from their shoulders. The baby may be human, but also an alpaca, llama, puppy, lamb or even a piglet. This woman has put her charge in hand-knit baby clothes with a crown of ceremonial coca leaves, an important medicine plant at high altitudes. This cria (baby alpaca) smiles because it knows it’s mommy’s favorite. I worked to capture the dazzling colors and intricacies of Andean textiles as well as the almost unbearable cuteness and innocence of the alpaca cria. May this bring you a smile every time you look at it.

“I create convergent media art that celebrates the values of rural life and of the land itself, that fosters a sense of self-empowerment, self-love, self-representation, community, and the strengths of traditional cultures. My work explores the relationship between both high and low technology cultures, ethnic and class identities, shamanic tourism, and an expanding sense of the natural and supernatural worlds. As a verbal and visual storyteller, I strive to commit my rich and varied life experiences to canvas and paper, sharing the ceremonial life of indigenous communities in both normal and visionary time, and exploring concepts of strength and vulnerability through treatments of my royal, noble, and humble ancestors. What starts out as contemplation becomes, I hope, a portal for the viewer to briefly enter another reality, leaving only a sense of a picture album of the road not taken and a eulogy for the self-imposed limits of our existence.” Books "ESCAPE From the Darkroom! - Old-School Principles Applied to Modern Digital Photography" [2013] “GeoHypnotics: A Gentle Way to Access Deeper Consciousness” [2016] Four volumes ; ; ;
