ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was inspired by my connection to the Midwest’s rural landscape and my desire to interpret that landscape through a personal lens. Not long ago, much of the rural Midwest was tall grass prairie. Modern farming practices have transformed the prairie into a machine designed to efficiently produce cash crops. “Subtler Monuments” is a meditation on this change. The painting was made using Utrecht and Winsor Newton oil paints. The support was stretched and prepared by the artist who applied six coats of Liquitex gesso to 12 0z. Utrecht cotton canvas. This painting was on tour throughout South Dakota as part of the 2020 Governor's Show Exhibition.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
