ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is inspired by the beauty of aging, hints of past opulence made more beautiful by the process of decay. I love gardens, especially those that ramble over ancient ,crumbling brick walls and decorative iron structures. I incorporated some faint floral imagery, and gold leaf with multiple layers of paint built up and scratched away. I hope this piece inspires others to consider how youthful beauty and new life are complimented by the complexity and wisdom of age. I consider, is decadence awe inspiring because it is fleeting? Do we appreciate all that glitters because nothing can shine in its original brilliance forever? I believe that decay and decadence are complimentary... there is something beautiful about watching a thing breakdown gently

As a painter, I live out my belief that art is about creation as opposed to imitation and work from my raw emotion as opposed to within a representational form of expression. Colour field painting and abstract expressionism influence my work. I expose layers of paint, plaster, and found paper with my brush, palette knife and a sander. The paintings symbolize the complex layers of our selves, made up of our varied and individual experiences. As humans we want to be viewed in our entirety as Aristotle said, “ The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In our entirety, even with our scars and flaws, we can be quite beautiful.
