A doctor in astrophysics, Roger is a self-taught artist and a curious global explorer. As an ever-evolving artist, his works explore abstraction through different mediums and styles. Having had the privilege of living around the world, Roger’s works have been appreciated in Singapore, France and the United Kingdom. He places great value on the diversity of cultures, people, landscapes and architecture and often incorporates his exposure and learning of these cultures and environments in his works. As an artist, Roger’s interests lie in colours, contrast, depth and strong or bold statements. Contemporary artistes that he is particularly fond of include Lim Khim Katy (Vietnam), David Tress (UK), Michelle Torrez (USA), David Hockney (UK). Naturally from within a blank space, Roger goes into each painting with just a selection of colours and very little pre-conceived ideas of what the painting will become. Often his art can be inspired by anything from seascapes and landscapes, the mottled light and dark of a tree lined lane, or the simple patterns on a pebble. He works in both oils and acrylics as they each have different characteristics and allows varied techniques to lead his artistry therefore creating distinct outcomes. “Acrylic works are often more spontaneous, energetic and bright, through the nature of the medium. Oils lend themselves to a more gradual creation process, with layers of paint allowing for depth and texture to develop in time.” From there each stroke and interaction of colour leads his journey. As he lets the painting emerge, sometimes Roger will recognise something in it but on other occasions not. “I have decided therefore not to name the paintings in a way that would lead the viewer to interpret it through a label.” In naming each artwork, Roger uses Excel to generate and select random characters between 1-26 to allow each viewer to possess an individual journey and interpretation when experiencing his works and not be led by his own perception or ideas. In essence, the title like the painting is abstract. There is a lot of energy in Roger's work that flows naturally from a space inside to pallette to canvas. He works mainly in oils and acrylics and loves to rework and interact constantly with the paint on the canvas and to see the form of the painting reveal itself.
