“Delacroix II (Study 2012)” was made near the end of an over 20 year process of studying and responding to paintings which started in 1991 with a study of the centre piece of Uccello’s Battle of San Romano. “Delacroix II” is the first of a set of paintings of equal size, called “Pentaptych”. While the first such studies were made on roughly postcard size wooden blocks, later joined up to larger paintings, the panels of “Pentaptych” are of much larger dimension, permitting physical or gestural painting on a scale similar to the full human body. The full set includes: • Delacroix II (Study - 2012) • Rublev • Bernardo Bellotto • Carpaccio/Volpedo • Spring in Carlingford Lough “Delacroix II (Study 2012)” is also the second study of/response to Delacroix’ “Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople”. The first one was made in 2011 on a slightly smaller scale. The painting is made on raw linen canvas, partially primed with white wall paint and stretched on deep edged exhibition stretchers. The painting is intended to sit flat on a wall, leaving the edges exposed. If framed, a frame should be chosen, which keeps the edges exposed. The canvas is stretched on high quality laminated exhibition stretcher bars which won't bend or skew. https://www.russellandchapple.co.uk/index.php/canvas-stretching/exhibition-stretcher-bars/exhibition-stretcher-bars.html @paintbritain painting of the day on 4th October 2015 https://twitter.com/paintbritain/status/650611346740895746 Exhibited: May 2018.
