Depths Print

This painting was inspired by a visual experience I recently had at park in New York. During an autumn morning walk, sunlight bathed a section of a concrete wall in gorgeous light. As the light wrapped around the form of the wall, and it dispersed softly over the concrete’s texture and looked almost like ripples in water. The light was partially blocked by leaves on a nearby tree, and the leaves gently moved in the wind. When I returned to my studio, I wanted to recreate a feeling of moving light on a cool day. I hope viewers will feel the activity and somewhat unpredictable movement of the scene, and also an overall sense of ease similar to how I felt when viewing the scene that inspired the painting. In my recent paintings, videos, drawings and photographs, I make ambiguous imagery with a quality of being simultaneously blurred and in-focus, because I am interested in liminal/in between spaces and ideas. I reference the natural and constructed environments of my city (New York), especially its beaches and parks. I aim to capture the intangible elements of my references—the movement and aliveness of the city and of the ocean. This is on stretched canvas with a thick profile. The texture is relatively smooth, with a feathery blurring of edges. Hanging hardware not included.
