ABOUT THE ARTWORK
"Architected Landscapes" explores broad themes of nature, isolation, place, and memory. For this piece I researched cathedral-like architecture to define and bring interest to the landscape. Sometimes we ask ourselves what we worship and why we worship it. Water has always played a life-giving and sometimes cataclysmic role especially in dry, arid landscapes. In this painting, it is at least one of the jewels.

I grew up in the American Southwest, exposed to desert landscapes and modern architecture. My father, a civil engineer, took me on tours of jails and prisons in my youth simultaneous to my religious, celestial grooming in enclosed institutions. This exposure to vast landscapes and constrained, invasive dwellings continues to shape my artistic career. I am intrigued by the contradiction of being in a place yet not being the place, that there is always a link and separation between structure and freedom.
