About The Artwork

This is my painting called “Despair”, acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30 inches. Rather than just paint sidewalk lines and a street in back of this lonely homeless woman, I wanted to show the emotional turmoil going on around her. I wanted to show how the world is closing in on her; how she is drowning. I wanted to express what is going on in her mind as well as show her image on the street. Look close and you may see some of her demons. There she is, all alone under a lamp pole, with her only possessions, sitting in the cold in an almost fetal position, struggling to keep warm. This is not a model. This is a real woman. I hope I have done her justice and created something to call attention to homelessness, poverty, mental health, and the unfortunate in our world. The reference photo used was with permission of Cheryl Kurman. This painting received 431 likes and over 200 comments in three days from the FaceBook group page, “Acrylic Painting”. I am so humbled.
