This is a favourite with marine ecologist divers. It was created as one of two oil paintings (the other is the Razorbill), to celebrate the release of bird-tracking data collected by the RSPB F.A.M.E. Project. As with the other deepwater work, it is painted from the position of being humble and non-threatening by being deep down and looking up towards the light at the surface of the sea, where you are unseen and unheard. It inspires us to wonder at our vast ocean life and consider it part of us...and not separate.

Pictures can change our lives. Tenby born artist Rhian Field lives and works in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. Having been taught to draw and observe nature like an artist by her Father from a very young age, she is now coastal science-trained and paints with a purpose, with an understanding of how everything connects in a meaningful way. As an Expressionist painter, her beautiful subaqua 'Deepwater Collection' captures the light and movement which is essential for life in our Oceans. Her collectors include ecologist-divers and those who are mesmerised by our coastal and aquatic environment. Subjects include Grey Seals, diving birds such as Guillemots, Razorbills and Gannets, as well as Jellyfish, Octopus and Kelp. Rhian believes Art has a role to play beyond decoration and aesthetic enjoyment, proposing that "art is a powerful tool, and perhaps artists and scientists alike, have a responsibility to engage humankind in critical matters." She also believes that art has no value without the viewer as consuming art requires the creative brain. Rhian has exhibited her paintings in public spaces across Wales and in Scotland, collaborating with organisations such as the the National Assembly for Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the RSPB. Most of her work is inspired by her degree in Coastal & Marine Environment Studies and played an important role in her recent PhD field research, which explored the potential for artistic visuals to engage the public in climate change. She is currently working on art which expresses human struggles with power in our complex world. Website:
