About The Artwork

These women are on one of life's fairground rides. Layers of narrative entice for the viewer to wonder what's happening, where these women are from and what they're up to. Verging on the edge of erotic, there's also a faint whisp of sweet melancholy from the girl sitting at the front. My paintings are rarely planned and the content comes from a place I have little control over. I generally only try to interpret their meanings in hindsight. I can clearly see parts that have meaning for me, but the hope is that each viewer will also find their own narratives. The circus/fairground is a place of magic, mystery and romantic intrigue for many. Above all, these paintings are light hearted, a celebration of how it feels to be witnessing this circus parade we call life.

I'm an artist based in East Lothian (Scottish North Sea Coast.) My work is a celebration of the crazy circus we call life. The small windows are a common motif in my work, representing the silent witness inside each of us, that we can maybe feel behind our eyes, looking out upon the bizarre dramas of this parade. I work in sculpture, painting and drawing, my preference is for narrative imagery which comes to me unannounced (from my subconscious?) My job is a humble one; simply to make the marks that represent these images as best I can. The narrative imagery invites interpretation from each viewer, it's fun, quirky, can be a little cheeky, and at other times a touch sorrowful. I recommend viewing it with your heart and not your mind. But in either case, my wish is simply that it's enjoyed.. Damian
