ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is inspired by night time walks in nature particularly to the jagged, volcanic rocks of Beacon Hill in Leicestershire. The painting is an attempt to create the dreamy feel of a partly remembered time when I went to this place often at dusk. I am fascinated by the way landscapes shift in our memories. We create our own mythology about a place and our response to it the more we think about it over a long period of time. Therefore this is more of a dreamscape than an accurate landscape. I hope it has the essence of a place and time. The painting is set between dusk and night, when insects flicker in the last fading light of the day. There are many thin oil glazes applied in the traditional oil painting style to create luminosity and to build up complex hues that change subtly in different light. There are bold marks made with a knife and rubber scrapers contrasting with tiny marks made with ink brushes. The variety of marks and textures adds interest and holds the attention whilst forming a cohesive whole. My main influences are JMW Turner, Chu Teh Chun, Darren Waterston and Cruz Jimenez.

I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
