ABOUT THE ARTWORK

With social media as such a big part of our lives, I can't help but reflect on what it means to spend that much time focusing on the 'self' and self image. How are we interacting with others differently and how are we interacting with ourselves differently. This piece is part of a series specifically relating to a sense of self and home. I feel nostalgic (saudade, home-sick) for the south where I grew up but it hasn't been 'home' for a long time. It's a listless, groundless feeling that pervades much of my work.

Ashley grew up in Georgia and attended Savannah College of Art and Design for Photography, Though she's always had a passion for drawing and painting it was at SCAD that she further developed her style. Most of her paintings are acrylic and mixed media (spray paint, ink, graphite, pastel, oil etc) on canvas. She is constantly experimenting with new ways to visually represent popular culture and the way it affects communication and the need for immediate gratification both personally and in the world at large. Her most recent collections are specifically focused on social media and it's effect on language and communication in daily life. Her work is playful, political and often incorporates the color pink in many shades. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY
