Felix Delandre work oscillates between personal and art historical references and experimentation is primordial in his painting practice. The work takes form in Abstract, Conceptual and Minimalist paintings using shapes, colours, words and gestural marks to achieve its effect. He paints on loose paper, canvas offcuts, fluctuating between word riddles, scribbles, Iconography and geometric abstraction. A strong emphasis is given on the process and the intuitive motions of the hand. The approach is both playful and irreverent as the canvas is laid flat on the floor and welcomes accidental marks and the picking up of paint, dirt and other elements of the studio environment. While artistic precedents appear to be among his works influences, they never settle into certainty. Though vaguely familiar, the images are clear and present themselves with a direct gestural confidence. Much remains ambiguous as they possess something deep & troubling beneath their simplicity, exploring the very implications of the creative process.
