About The Artwork

I once took a photo of a multicolored duck floating happily in a pond. The photo had the duck exactly in the middle, surrounded by some concentric ripples in the water reflecting the sunlight and some of the duck's colors. I then used this picture as a digital photo art experiment, rendering the duck into a colorful 'ball' surrounded by some swirls of light. It got on the verge of abstract. Looking at the manipulated picture, I found the result so interesting in terms of movement, it's color/greyness contrast, and it's overall humorous and vibrant atmosphere, that I decided to put it in paint. The result shows a hint of feathers and shadows, set in a disorienting realm of twists and swirls. In going about it this way, I tried to articulate the indivisibility of the duck and the water in which it swims, that we otherwise take for granted. And also I tried to articulate the wonder of color and movement in totally ordinary everyday scenes. Using very simple means, the process of digital photo manipulation shows just how easy it is to turn a simple photograph into an abstract painting-like reality. In fact, often it is playing around with natural images like this (a colorful and non suspecting duck floating quietly in a pond) that triggers a starting point for my paintings.. where is the tipping point toward abstraction? What makes an image move? What has become of the duck..? To see the original and manipulated photos that led up to this painting, please see my blogpost: http://sonic-visual-art.blogspot.nl/2016/02/duck.html
