ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Typical narrow street in Seville. Callejon del agua. An old man walks with his cane along the street. He is approaching an arch formed by vines and ivy. The arch symbolizes the entrance to the other world. In reality the painting, for me , is like a dream, and the old man is passing to the other world as he enters the arch of the street he walked everyday.

Jose Blanco is a Spanish-American artist who lives in Austin, Texas. Born in Seville, Spain, Jose was interested in Arts from an early age. After attending the School of Arts in Seville he established an art studio along with his brother Juan Antonio. At his studio Jose embarked on his artistic career producing oil paintings. His subjects were mostly rooted in the scenes from his upbringing – landscapes, architecture, street scenes, gardens, religious traditions and bright Moorish architecture. His oil paintings are greatly influenced by Spanish artists such as Murillo, Velazquez, Sorolla, Garcia Aranda and many others. He copied the works of these masters as part of his artistic training. Over the years Jose’s paintings have evolved into the colorful art he creates today. His vibrant palette and brush-work produce beautiful and romantic images. His paintings were sold from his studio and he also exhibited his work at galleries in Seville and Austin. In 2002, Jose moved to Austin, Texas, where he set up his studio. The subjects of Jose’s oil paintings are now mostly portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, nature and religious themes. He also paints “in plein air” using small canvases that later he extrapolates on a larger one at his studio.
