ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Painted on Winsor & Newton canvas board, this piece was inspired by a pose by .art, closely cropped. I thought it held so much emotion and vulnerability that I wanted to put it onto canvas. It really represents how I think a lot of people feel right now, exhausted and wanting to crawl into a ball and shut things out. We’re all facing real issues, personal and societal and there’s a lot of pain. I want people to relate to the figure, feel what she is feeling. This painting is a reminder that you are not alone. I usually paint a lot bigger but I thought this pose was so intimate that I wanted to keep it small and something to be discovered rather than the main focus of a room.

Ryan is a Brighton & Hove based portrait artist who now works almost exclusively in oil paint. He completed a degree in Art & Design and Media Studies back in the late 90s. It was 2019 when he decided to put a 15-year career in publicity aside to once again feed his creativity and pick up a paint brush. His portraiture comes from a fascination with people and their emotional motivation, and he seeks to find the real person behind the face that we show to the world. Sometimes all it takes is a look in the eye or a slight curve of the mouth to capture the essence of a person and this is what drives his paintings. Through his work he seeks to find connection with people, hoping that they learn something about him and in turn learn something about themselves. “I’m not always interested in literal likeness when I paint a subject but in what gives a person their uniqueness. I love to paint something that brings joy to someone, and it really is my motivation to paint.” Ryan is a instinctive artist and buyer of art. If it makes him feel something he'll fall in love with it. His hope is that his work gives people that same visceral feeling. He works in his studio conveniently placed in the back garden, usually with his dog Daisy snoozing nearby.
