I made this portrait of my friend Antonio Urdiales after he passed from AIDS in 2010. He was a mentor to me throughout my youth about art and its introspective purpose on both the artist and the viewers. He was full of love and always had the best parties full of the avant-garde in the southeastern town of Montevallo, AL. It was a great loss for me; but, also for our troubled, mutual friend, Lil' Plott, who proposed the piece be made. Sadly, Lil' also passed two years after. I've always been influenced by Post-Modernism, such as Francis Bacon, Abstract Expressionism & Fluxist works--yet Modern motifs still find their way into everything I do, such as Surreal & Futurist landscapes. I hope the viewer feels all the love that he embodied while also the celebration of life that it's meant to uphold. This work is in oils on canvas. It contains some embellishments with charcoal & it hangs on its own.

United States
I was born in the southeastern part of the United States. I was born to a trailer park. I experienced great hardships, as everyone experiences hardships (to some degree), in my youth. From homelessness to abuse & eventually self-harm. I spent most of my youth resolving these issues and becoming at peace with myself. I studied at the San Francisco Art Institute while learning to adjust to being alive & before that I went to the Alabama School of Fine Arts--where I learned all of the elements & principles as well as conceptual notions and new genres. Estranged at 25, I moved back to Birmingham, AL from Denver, CO after an attempt at painting murals there (mostly because my mother needed my help at home). Once again able to craft large scale works free of restraints I began to show my works. The Mobile Museum of Art took note of my works, calling them "compelling" they began to represent me in 2018. I'm a Contemporary Neo-Southern Gothic Fine Artist. My works relate to memory and other cognitive functions such as thought process. I consider my work to be narrative, while also abstract & conceptual. I have an affinity for great literature & have been reviewed as having a "poetic" nature to my body of work.
