"Ephemeral Muse, the eternal nature of Beauty" breathes new life into Leonardo da Vinci’s enigmatic portrait, capturing the fragility of identity, the impermanence of form, and the energy of transformation. Like a whispered memory or a fleeting dream, the figure emerges from a dynamic interplay of t...

Born on June 17, 1985, in Naples, Italy, Andrea Villanis, known professionally as Drew.Lab_One, is a Berlin-based urban artist celebrated for her innovative fusion of semi-realistic portraiture and abstract calligraphy. Her artistic journey commenced at the age of 13 in experimental theater, where she cultivated a deep passion for portraiture and the expressive potential of the human form. Pursuing studies in modern philology, Drew.Lab_One developed a profound appreciation for the power of language and words. This academic background seamlessly intertwined with her artistic endeavors, leading her to explore the realms of classical calligraphy. Engaging in a meditative practice of scripts such as Roman Capital, Uncial, Copperplate, and Gothic, she eventually transcended traditional letterforms to craft a unique typographic style that bridges historical traditions with contemporary expression. Her distinctive approach amalgamates elements from four diverse calligraphic traditions: Arabic: Infusing fluid gestures that evoke a sense of movement and grace. Urban Nation Italian: Incorporating geometric precision and rational structures, lending elegance to her compositions. Cyrillic: Embedding structural depth and complexity. Gothic: Harnessing robust and bold characteristics that impart strength and presence. By intertwining these influences, Drew.Lab_One creates a visual language that transcends mere legibility, focusing instead on design, rhythm, and the spiritual resonance of text. Her works often feature repetitive motifs and phrases, establishing ritualistic spaces that invite viewers into contemplative and immersive experiences. For her, art serves as a ritual—a transformative process where words become mantras, embodying the philosophy that "words create reality." Since relocating to Berlin in 2013, the city's dynamic urban landscape has profoundly influenced her work. The walls of Berlin have become her canvas, facilitating a dialogue between her art and the city's rich tapestry of cultures and histories. Her pieces often reflect on societal themes, offering both critique and celebration of urban life. Notable Collaborations and Exhibitions: "Love Letters to the City" at Urban Nation Museum (2024–2027): Drew.Lab_One contributed "Made of Desires and Fears," a piece that plays with the dual meaning of "letter"—as both correspondence and alphabet character.
