ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The Selaron steps are a famous landmark in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, frequented by many intrigued tourists due to the mosaiced tiles completely covering the area. A Chilean artist, Jorge Selaron, who used to live in a house by the steps, gradually added the tiles over many years whilst living there. He collected the tiles from around the world as a tribute to the Brazilian people. It is a colourful, bustling area of 215 steps, where people love to take photos and pose with family and friends - the colours, patterns, the people and the noisy throng of excitement is what I have tried to capture in my painting, using a limited palette to mix an array of vibrant colours.
