ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is "Exploration #1" in my Macro Explorations Series. Following my exploration of still lifes in "...if Morandi painted my knick-knacks," I became entranced by the captivating world held within seemingly ordinary objects. Gazing upon my collection of stones and antiques, I found myself drawn into mesmerizing depths of color and light. These moments of quiet contemplation revealed the immense beauty and potential for transcendence that resides even in the most mundane. "Macro Explorations" marks a shift from depicting objects to capturing their essence. It's a celebration of the way cherished possessions can transport us, sparking a potent blend of nostalgia and memory. Through amplified brushstrokes and a focus on materiality, I strive to capture the portals of light held within colored glass and the quiet joy these objects evoke. The shift to large, human-scale stretched canvases allows me to create immersive experiences. The paint interacts freely across the expansive surfaces, mirroring the way light dances and transforms across cherished objects. This series a testament to the profound beauty and meditative spaces we can discover within the ordinary, waiting to be revealed.

My work is an exploration of the intersection between the physical world and the realm of memory and contemplation. Inspired by nature and a sense of nostalgia, I use a combination of painting and found or cherished vintage objects to create experiences that evoke feelings of peace and tranquility. Central to my practice is the question of whether art can function as both an object and an experience. I'm fascinated by the idea that we imbue objects with sentimental value, transforming them into anchors to cherished memories. My abstract impressionist style bridges the gap between observation and abstraction, capturing the essence of a place or feeling rather than its literal depiction. Repetitive visuals, whether natural elements or personal symbols, deepen this connection, creating a visual language that resonates with my meditative and introspective nature. Through the use of color, texture, and composition, I strive to create a sense of flow and serenity, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on their own experiences of peace and contemplation. My work is intended for those drawn to the duality and oneness of the material and the spiritual, those who seek solace in quiet observation and a deeper understanding of the world and memories we hold dear. Art making, for me, is a place to find serenity. The creative spark often ignites from moments of quiet observation in nature. These experiences translate into the studio through a combination of intuition and experimentation. I frequently begin with washes of color, allowing them to interact organically and guide the direction of the piece. Found objects, imbued with personal significance, are then incorporated, adding layers of texture and narrative. The process is one of constant dialogue - between myself, the materials, and the emerging artwork. This fascination with the intersection of the physical and spiritual is echoed in the work of artists like Agnes Martin and Hilma af Klint, whose explorations of abstraction and symbolism deeply inspire me. The mystical visions of Remedios Varo and Alex Grey tap into a wellspring of human experience that transcends the tangible. While my artistic explorations emerge from memory and contemplation, I feel a kinship with these artists in our shared pursuit of a visual language that transcends the limitations of the everyday world.
