Mercedes Lewis creates abstract works using techniques of sculpting paint, masking, layering, color and mixed media to express her emotions behind the issues that African Americans are facing in modern day society. Her art explores concepts surrounding systematic oppression, slavery, racism, sexuality, identity, and dehumanization. She uses color as a form of therapy and creates art to express her emotions behind the African American experience. The artwork FURY is inspired by the emotions behind the issues that have been a reoccurring theme in the African American experience. My initial reaction to some of the issues can start with anger but that stems from the sadness of the reality of a world in which systematic oppression influences the world around us. The gold represents the perseverance despite the impact that the system may bring onto African American lives.
