ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Fall of the Rebel Angels is a traditional subject in art history and in painting in particular. These paintings are often immediately eye catching for their compositional element of a strong vertical, a column of fire that is the battleground for the war in heaven. The Archangel Michael casting Lucifer from Heaven for lusting after free will, scattering his army of Fallen Angels across the face of the earth. Without wings, how do we sort them from amongst the ruins of men. I built this stretcher which is reinforced with four cross intersecting support pieces and is mounted with two D-rings and has a wire for hanging alternatively.

I create paintings by pulling multiple layers of paint one over the other in order to reveal the layers underneath through the tearing and fracturing of the layers above. It’s to achieve these small areas of color within the larger field that are saturated by the history of this layering. Occasionally the field becomes beautiful and then subsequently must be destroyed. Only through this method can the shallow graves of better angels be revealed.
