ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Driving from our main house in VA to our cabin in WV is always picturesque, but when the fall colors come out the drive becomes spectacular. The reference photo for this painting was taken near dusk by my daughter while capturing those first hints of gold and rust. A week later the colors would include the brilliant corals, reds, and magentas as well. This painting is done on canvas with high quality oil paints applied via palette knife, creating texture and depth. Currently offered unframed, the edges are not painted so I highly recommend the piece be framed for display. The river scene is peaceful and calm, the fall colors still emerging and not yet explosive so the viewer feel relaxed and contemplative. Definitely a painting to hang in your home office for when that WFH teleconference gets a little too...tense.

I'm inspired by the purity and intensity of nature's colors--in striving to match her glory, never getting there, but so very delighted with my attempts. I will never stop trying to get that perfect pink of a glowing sunset or that elusive golden yellow on the tips of the California poppy. I often start my landscapes plein air and comlete them in studio. This allows me to capture the sense of the environment: the serenity of a calm stream at sunset, the electric motion of a roiling thunderstorm, or even the surprise of a rock turning into a turtle as it plops into a pond.
