ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I was inspired to create this work when I saw a small painting by the 16th - 17th century artist Paul Bril on a visit to the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. My painting is a Scottish version of his "Fantastic Landscape". I wanted to create a composition that leads your eye through the landscape from the rocky outcrop in the foreground to the ruined castle and then across to the distant tower on the far side of the river. I invite you to explore the sense of time and space in this work. People build castles, time and the elements sculpt them into ruins with a thousand stories to tell. Due to the size of this painting, for lighter and safer shipping, it is mounted in a black wood/plastic composite frame with an acrylic front, not glass. The purchaser may wish to have the painting reframed. This has been taken into consideration when pricing this item.

Kenneth Allan is a watercolour artist who was born and grew up in the Scottish Borders. Having travelled the world, and spending many years living in Sumatra, Indonesia, Kenneth is inspired by memories of his homeland. Currently back in Scotland he is pursuing his art career online. Kenneth says, "My inspiration comes mostly from memories. I find that if I visit a place and then paint it as I remember it, the end result is usually romanticised. Hills are more rugged, skies are more atmospheric and there is a sense of history in the painting that you wouldn't see in a photograph. I always endeavour to express in my paintings- "a mind's eye view."" "I use watercolour paint in ways that break the boundaries of the conventional. I paint on card, using a variety of different tools including rollers, pallet knives, cloths and brushes." Kenneth has had many private exhibitions in Scottish Borders' towns, including Peebles, Selkirk, Melrose and Hawick. He has also exhibited in the "Artist's Town", Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway.
