"Feels Like Freedom" is part of my ongoing exploration of depicting real women and girls enjoying and experiencing life in and around the water. This particular image struck me as a powerful example of real women, with bodies not considered beautiful by North American standards, unapologetically enjoying a beautiful moment at the seashore. I get a lot of surprised, and negative, reactions to this painting whenever I show it at gallery events. It sparks great and uncomfortable conversations with other women about body image! Personally, I feel that if you have a body, and you are at the beach, you have a beach body! I use imagery from photographs that I collect from a variety of sources - some my own or friends, others are from stock photos - all of which resonate with my love of the ocean and desire to show strong women owning the seascape. Bright and strong. Deep and powerful. Wild and unrelenting. Beautiful and mighty. All these describe what I see when I paint both water AND women. "Feels Like Freedom" has been exhibited at: Lunenburg Art Gallery Group Show, Lunenburg NS, (October 2022) White Point Beach Artisan Show, White Point Beach Resort NS (Nove mber 2020) Petite Riviere Vinyard Solo Show, Petite Riviere NS, (October 2019)

Welcome to my World of Women and Waves! Ready to dive into a world of seascapes and real women enjoying whatever they damn well please? I'm an oil painter who loves color and movement and all things beachy! I'm a feminist with 3 awesome daughters, 2 chaotic pets, and 1 talented, author husband. I drink a ton of black coffee, and walk a bunch of dogs to clear my head. I find myself thinking "Whattheeverlovin'fuck?" a lot, sooo...learning to meditate, keeping the gratitude journal, living with "progress not perfection" as a motto in my studio! My art concerns: I was raised in a small village at the edge of a fierce sea and to me, sweeping ocean horizons speak of escape, change, and freedom. My figurative and portrait work tend to invoke similar themes through feminism, climate, and immigration. In all of my work I am constantly looking to capture the energy, movement, and intensity of our ever-shifting world and the women in it!
