Fernande Olivier (1881-1966) Fernande was born out of wedlock. She was raised by her mother’s half sister, a terrible woman who forced Fernande at seventeen into marriage to a violent and abusive man. She eventually escaped this misery and ran away to Paris. Upon arrival Fernande by happenstance met a sculptor who offered to let her live in his studio in exchange for Fernande posing for him. With no other options she agreed. Fernande was tall, intelligent, elegant with red hair. She quickly become a much sought after artist’s model. The sculptor’s studio was next to Picasso’s. She met Picasso in 1904. It took until 1905 before Picasso would convince Fernande to move in with him. Picasso was very much in love. They lived together for seven years. These were the most creative times of Picasso’s life. Fernande was there through Blue, Rose, Cubism and the life changing Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Fernande has never received the credit she deserves for her influence during these amazing times. Picasso painted over 60 portraits of her. An accomplished artist in her own right, she painted and wrote two books about Picasso and their time together. Picasso never allowed Fernande to pose for anyone else while they were together. I don’t think he would have objected to me painting Fernande this one time.

I have been drawing and painting for sixty years. I am a self taught primitive who decided many years ago to forego any formal training to make my work unique to me. No one paints like I do. My work is imbued with the sum of my life experiences. I am the great grandson of VanGogh (spent a few months in a Navy psychiatric ward, made some nice wallets), Gaugin (at 18 I moved from upstate New York to Southern California, so much better than the South Seas), Matisse (I inherited his love of color) and Picasso (his artistic bravery and of course his life style). I have always fought against man’s inhumanity. Tried to stop the first Gulf War. Ran for President against Bush 1 and Clinton as an artist. It was that vision thing. Tried to stop the bombing and ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia with a 10x12 foot painting on a downtown building. I only paint women. They have been demeaned and excluded for far too long. I believe they are the world’s future if we are to survive as a planet. When I do paint a man I paint myself and always as a harlequin jester. My body of work includes pencil, pen, crayon, pastels, watercolor and oil. I have produced thousands of drawings and hundreds of paintings. I’ve chosen this quixotic life and have no regrets. As long as there are windmills I will continue to fight.
