View In My Room
I was moved to paint this scene plein air in the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio because the willow was the lone tree of its kind in the field. It stood out among the evergreens and other types of deciduous trees. I'm drawn to scenes that can be used as metaphors for more personal feelings of not quite fitting in with a group. The blooming wildflowers lend sparks of color and interest, drawing the viewer in along the road and over the knoll. Using a palette knife required me to think directly about how I applied the paint. It also prevents me from getting mired in fine details, thus risking losing the overall impression I envisioned.
