ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was a creative breakthrough experience in using cold wax medium with oil paint. I had tried several different tools for creating the look I wanted and had no interest in using brushes for this type of medium. I finally gave up around midnight and put my art supplies away. I figured I would try again another day, as I knew the painting wasn't finished. After sitting in silence looking at the painting out of the corner of my eye, it dawned on me: I would give wax paper a try. I'm not sure why. I took my art supplies out again and set up my work surface, mixed some grey and then some lilac grey, and took a small piece of wax paper. As I began dabbing it, and moving it across the surface, I moved into a deep creative flow, and discovered that was my missing piece ... yep, good old waxed paper. I love the way the underlayers show through -- green, red, blue, orange and of course, burnt sienna, which I use in almost every painting I ever made; that's the beauty of using cold wax. It's half what you add to the painting and half what you remove to let the underlayers show through. My father named this painting based on what he saw immediately when he first looked at it.

Elizabeth Olderøy is a self-taught artist, writer, singer and performer originally from the U.S. In 2020, she married her Viking husband and left the city of Chicago behind to move to the majestic west coast of Norway. Over the years, Elizabeth dabbled in becoming a professional singer, wrote a dozen songs and an award-winning screenplay and tried her hand at visual arts, but her creative career never got off the ground, mainly due to an unwillingness to pick "just one" creative outlet to pursue, and persistent fears that grew stronger as the decades went by. However, the longing for an artistic life path never went away, and at times came on so intensely, she felt as if her soul was dying. Finally, in 2017, at age 50, Elizabeth began her life as a visual artist in earnest. She experimented with watercolors, acrylics and drawing. Within months, she sold her first painting, for a respectable $1200. She took it as a sign to keep going. Along the way, a friend introduced her to Oil & Cold Wax Medium, and she was hooked. While she makes a wide variety of art and crafts, Elizabeth considers Cold Wax & Oil her favorite painting medium due to its incredible versatility. (But really, for Elizabeth, making any art and crafts it's all about creative nourishment, self-expression and having FUN.)
