Before making the change to full-time painting, I had previously spent over 35 years running my own graphic design practice, working in the financial, pharmaceutical and advertising sectors. I have been painting on and off for nearly 50 years, my first oil painting was done in my grandfathers studio when I was about 5 years old! My acrylic paintings are concerned with optical constructs that explore the relationship between juxtaposed colours within a strategically defined two-dimensional space. Colour games, illusion and deflection, imbalance and disturbance, all play their part. My oil paintings usually feature figure studies with subtle, surreal elements or unusual points of view. They are very different from my flat colour, hard-edge work. When not painting, I produce ceramics, mostly Raku or pit fired, one-off non-functional ware and sculpture.
