ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Masked lapwing (Vanellus miles), Australia. I wanted to capture the detail of that remarkable head, but within a freer whole. And I wanted to look for ways of subverting "speech bubbles" so that they become an integral part of the image. Alkyd oils on board, with acrylic underpainting and additional use of graphite pencil and marker pen. Board edges white. Varnished. Signed and dated bottom right. Size 50 x 50 cm (19.7 x 19.7 inches), edge depth 2.1 cm (0.8 inches). Reference photo credit: James Kennerley (use for this painting individually authorized). This painting relates to "Road go nowhere" in subject and interpretation, and the two could be hung together.
