My paintings are investigations of layered space created through colour relationships and gestural brush marks. Working with colour energises and motivates me, and my paintings are concerned with its’ potential as a source of positive emotional response. They are an exploration of the validity of continuing a path of enquiry started during the early modern period when artists established the use of colour detached from objective reality for reasons of artistic freedom and autonomy. Inspiration and triggers for my work are found in the textures and colours of the countryside where I live, woven and printed textiles, and frequent trips to India. My paintings also tap into memories of my childhood in Borneo, calibrated in a spectrum that is lighter and brighter than the northern light of home in Cumbria. I draw on sketches, photos, memories with an idea, and perhaps make some drawings or prints to improvise and support the design phase. Juxtaposing source material and different colour ranges using stencils and resist techniques allows me to build up complex visual relationships. An interest in yoga underpins my approach to making paintings, and I try to create the conditions that will enable me to achieve a balance of mind, emotions, sensory perceptions and actions while I am working.

The paintings and prints shown here are investigations of layered space created through colour relationships and gestural brush marks that channel uplifting and positive emotions that are sensual and tactile. My work links personal experience with wider themes of celebration, mutability and renewal. The stream of everyday activities informs the work as do patterns and motifs from woven and printed textiles that summon up memories of my childhood in Borneo. The process of painting is the catalyst that brings these diverse experiences from past, present and imagined futures together and enables them to come to life in a new form. I hope that viewers will become part of the process of realising the eventual meanings and contexts for the paintings through their own personal interpretations and responses.
