ABOUT THE ARTWORK

image 20x24ins framed 24.5x28.5 ins I have always admired the red interiors painted by Matisse. This still life was inspired by that idea - to simplify the colours in the rest of the work so that those lovely white blooms could have a star part. So the name comes from that premise. I enjoyed playing with expanding the simple red to include a subtle variation of pinks.Greens are used also, but extremely low key ones. The pale frame enhances the deep jewel like quality of these reds, while allowing the light colours of the flowers to be the main focus. Colour is hugely important in my work so I only use the best quality paints. Likewise the surface - I favour only 2 makes of canvas that I have found accept the paint in the way I like. I hope you have enjoyed looking at this painting as much as I did while painting it. This artwork ships in a crate to protect both painting and frame.

The landscape is my main source of subject for painting - particularly the orderly impact on the landscape of human habitation and farming. The framework imposed by fencing hedges ditches etc and the impact these divisions have on the land is always interesting. Colours lent to the land for a few months by growing crops is another element. The rather harsh lemon of the rape or mustard crops, the cool blue of a linseed field, the effervescent mixture of echinacea flowers - all these colours provide problems for an artist. While they are very dramatic , visually they don’t sit well with the native trees and hedge colours, but I am drawn to them as a subject on exactly that account. This is what inspires my work - colour.
