Art Description

Painting: Paint on Paper.

This work is inspired by Leonardo DaVinci's plans for a flying machine.

I was struck, examining a model of Leonardo's proposed machine, at it's unexpected wonder. I think we are used to viewing old machines as somehow 'quaint' at best, and absurd at worst. Leonardo's flying machine is simply not of that class. It possesses and immense power - just to be in it's presence - that has no bearing on it's age or utility. It's as if the most famous of renaissance men found something eternal in the layout and interconnectedness of those wings. A form whose importance goes far beyond the simple ambition of flight. I wanted to capture something of that immense power that makes you hold your breath for a moment. In some small measure, I feel I have it here, like capturing an alchemical secret on the page.
