About The Artwork

In August 2018, I visited an old friend and her husband in Greece. I spent several weeks on the island of Naxos and then time in Athens where I visited the archeological museums. I became fixated on the small white marble Cycladic figures that date back to 3300-1100 BC. No one knows the purpose of these figures. Ninety-five percent of them are female; the five percent that are male are mostly musicians. These figures are often found in the graves of both men and women. Although they are now entirely white, it is believed that they were originally brightly painted. In my paintings, they have taken on the color of the earth. They are unlike fertility figures I have seen from other cultures. The figures have shield shaped heads, long angular necks, broad shoulders, small high breasts, and stand erect with one arm crossed over the other. Their proportions are more sturdy than elegant. They are usually seen individually, but I imagine them as a community of women who support each other in the isolation of their island culture.

Born in New York City. I am a painter who uses simplified space and bold color to create psychologically charged narrative paintings. My paintings explore social issues that have included: addiction (heroin), survival (cancer), relationships and alienation, and social change (in China). My most comprehensive body of work, Tales, began as a series of paintings, then grew into the basis for my bilingual (English/Spanish) book and film (of the same title), Tales: A Cautionary Story about Heroin Addiction. This film has been screened in numerous international film festivals.
