About The Artwork

Diptych Fragmented Feelings. Fragmentation describes a separating of something into pieces and then in this case combined together to create beauty. Life is like a butterfly. You undergo change before you become something beautiful. The individual is formed through layers of experience. This final painting is the result of a layering process of discovery similar to the life experience itself. I honor the importance of meditation and mindfulness in creating. The process I used to create this diptych was to build up the painting in a series of applications. The first layers were oil that was then allowed to dry. I completed the work by combining plaster and latex and acrylic paint combined with subliminal glitter dust as I was looking for the bright places layered beneath. I create Opaque areas of color that are brushed into the wet surface, leaving remnants of past layers. I continued adding and building layers of color that are both subtle and intense. When adding a layer I immediately removed a layer, leaving a residue of the new application in some places and covering it in others by the subsequent layer. Each layers creates fragmented memories. Fragmented Feelings is a metaphor for the life process. Life metaphors shape how we live, and help us to see beauty. 10x20x1.5 (Combined: 20”x20” x 1.5”) Oil, Mixed Media: Plaster, Latex, Acrylic. On Canvas

Cheryl Johnson Cheryl Johnson is an American abstract artist whose work has appeared in galleries throughout the US. Her works are held in numerous private collections in the US, Europe, and Canada. She maintains a studio in Kauai, HI and divides her time between there and Charlotte, NC. A highly collectible artist. With a long and varied career as an instructional designer and graphic artist. Johnson worked for many years as an instructional designer and graphic designer and was ensconced in a life of technology and marketing. In 2010, she gave up a regular pay cheque at IBM to pursue her love of painting full-time. Cheryl Johnson describes painting as "a way of sharing my internal dialog in an external way. My commitment is to create dynamic yet sensitive, lyrically beautiful, works of art. My work resonates with a passion for color, line and light created to share an expression of overlapping time, memory and reality. My intention is to create work that is truthful and real, that has depth and is compelling from a distance and up close. I have come to believe that gravitas in art relates most specifically to how well the artist can transform an emotional idea into its visual equivalent. ”
